The opening of the TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes network to competition is part of a gradual schedule set by European regulations. While SNCF remains today the main operator of most regional lines, the first lots should welcome new operators from the 2029 annual timetable onwards. The region has already launched its first calls for tenders in 2024, marking a key step in this transition.
The TER AURA network will be gradually split into five geographic lots, including the Auvergne lot (planned for December 2028), as well as the Haute-Savoie and cross-border, Chambéry–Grenoble and Lyon star lots, whose opening is scheduled between 2033 and 2034. The designation of the first new operator is expected by end of 2026.
To prepare for this change, the region is investing in new trains and has created a dedicated local public rail company to manage rolling stock and maintenance. The goal is clear: improve service quality, boost competition and reduce costs while ensuring the continuity of public rail service for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes residents.
During summer 2025, SNCF TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is rolling out several special offers to encourage low-cost train travel. Many tickets are priced between €1 and €10 depending on the route, with fixed fares from €5 on certain regional lines. Children under 12 travel free every Saturday when accompanied by an adult, and groups of 2 to 5 people get a 40% discount thanks to the Illico Promo Vacances offer — ideal for a low-cost trip with family or friends!
The OùRA TER card is an essential tool for simplifying your journeys in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It centralises your tickets, discounts and subscriptions for a wide range of transport modes in the region, making your trips more convenient and accessible.
With the OùRA card, you can manage not only your Léman Pass subscriptions and tickets, but also your combined TER and urban subscriptions (such as T-Libr), as well as get access to various mobility-related services, such as lockers, bike rental, park-and-ride facilities, and more.
To get your OùRA card for €5 and enjoy its many benefits, follow these simple steps:

What is the TER refund policy in the Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region?
That's an excellent question, and the answer is fairly simple.
In the Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, most TER tickets bought online, whether on the TER website or via platforms such as Tictactrip, can be cancelled and refunded free of charge up to 24 hours before departure. To find out whether your ticket is refundable, check the information on it. If there is no "non-refundable" notice, your ticket is eligible for a refund.
For tickets bought at the station, unused tickets are generally exchangeable or refundable free of charge, although a 10% deduction from the original amount may apply.
For subscriptions, a refund can be requested as long as the subscription has not yet started.
To start an online refund request, visit the TER Sud website and log in to your account via the "My orders" tab, entering the name and booking number used at the time of purchase.
Once logged in, you can proceed with the refund request for your TER Sud ticket. The amount will be credited to the bank card used for the purchase.
If your payment was made in full or in part with vouchers, you will need to contact TER Sud customer service to complete your refund request.
If your booking was made via platforms such as SNCF-Connect or Tictactrip, please contact that agency directly to get a refund.
Please note: Promotional TER tickets, such as TER ZOU! Été or TER ZOU! Promo tickets, are neither exchangeable nor refundable.
Your TER ticket is valid on all TER trains for the day on the selected route. You can therefore choose to travel on a different train than the one originally selected, as long as the journey remains the same.
On board regional TER trains, such as those in the Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, you can bring as much luggage as you like, with no specific limit.
The main condition is that you must be able to handle and carry your luggage yourself on the train. Make sure your luggage does not inconvenience other passengers and you can travel with as many bags as you want.
You can safely park your bike near stations, in dedicated spaces thanks to the TER+Vélo initiative, offering numerous storage options in the region.
On TER Sud coaches, bikes are allowed in the luggage hold. Capacity is limited to 3 bikes, subject to space availability.
Your bike can also travel with you on board TER SNCF Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur trains, placed in specially designed spaces, depending on availability.
What's more, as a TER customer you're entitled to help buying an electric bike, with a 25% discount on the purchase price.
How can I travel on TER Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur with my pet?
To travel with your pet on TER SNCF Sud, you will need to buy a specific ticket for your four-legged companion. This ticket costs 50% of the full-fare 2nd class ticket price, even if you are travelling in 1st class.
During your trip, your pet must follow certain rules to ensure everyone's safety and comfort:
On all TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes trains and TER trains across France, seat reservation and seat selection on board are not available.
Wherever you go, whether in Brittany or the Pays-de-la-Loire region, the golden rule is: first come, first served.

The TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (TER AURA) trains form one of the largest regional rail networks in France. Every day they carry hundreds of thousands of passengers, connecting major cities such as Lyon, Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand, Annecy and Saint-Étienne with rural and mountain areas. This network plays an essential role in daily commuting, as well as tourism and cross-border links to Switzerland.
The TER AURA network was created in 2017 from the merger of the former TER Auvergne and TER Rhône-Alpes networks, following the 2015 territorial reform. This merger made it possible to harmonise communication, fare policies and rolling stock management across the whole territory. Today the network has 76 lines and 335 stations, making it the second largest in France after Île-de-France.
Nearly 220,000 passengers use the TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes trains every day. The region is investing heavily in modernising the network: new trains, station renovations and improved punctuality. It has also strengthened the performance requirements imposed on SNCF to guarantee quality service without, for now, resorting to direct privatisation.
TER AURA combines railway heritage and innovation. Historic lines such as Clermont-Ferrand – Aurillac via the Lioran tunnel (opened in 1866) now sit alongside modern, fast services to the Alps, Geneva or the Rhône valley. This network remains a pillar of sustainable mobility, making it easier to reach urban, rural and tourist areas while reducing the carbon footprint of travel.
