📅 Since 31 May 2024, more than 4.9 million nights have already been booked at open-air campsites, a figure described as "very satisfying" by the Regional Committee for Tourism and Leisure of Occitanie (CRTL) for the upcoming summer. This represents a 6% increase compared to the same dates in 2023, with 74% of these concerning July and August. Bookings for September show a notable increase of 26%, offering campsite operators an additional opportunity, although drought remains a challenge for them.
Booking trends in the rental sector are following a slightly different path. While June shows a decline compared to 2023 (-3%), bookings for July and August show a "slight increase" (+2% and +6% respectively). Bookings for September are rising significantly by 30%.
However, on the coast, some resorts expect a slight drop in occupancy rates early in the season, particularly in July (-1.9%). Forecasts are more encouraging for late summer, with occupancy rates rising in August (+2.4%) and September (+3.8%). In the Pyrenees, another major tourist area of Occitanie, the forecast occupancy rate for the summer season averages 29.1%. Peer-to-peer rental accommodation, meanwhile, is seeing a slight slowdown in bookings.
Furthermore, the Occitanie region recorded 64.8 million overnight stays between January and May 2024, up 3% due to a rise in foreign overnight stays (+15%) and near-stable French overnight stays (-1%). However, Occitanie residents are noted to be travelling less within their own region (-12%). After a start to the year similar to 2023, tourist activity picked up significantly from the Easter weekend onwards.
🏅 In 2023, Occitanie broke its tourism attendance record with 225 million overnight stays. In addition to this success, the region is working to develop more sustainable tourism and has notably seen the return of British tourists.
Enjoy the charms of Occitanie for your summer holidays and discover a region rich in history, nature and flavours! 🌿🌊

🚆 Historically known as TER Midi-Pyrénées and TER Languedoc-Roussillon, TER Occitanie now forms a unified regional express transport network, covering the two former regions merged as part of the territorial reform. This model also inspires other networks such as TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine, which offers innovative solutions such as TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine tickets valid all day.
Like TER Brittany, the now-consolidated networks were created in 1986 to meet growing regional mobility needs. Initiatives such as €1 TER tickets in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine skipass reflect the regions' commitment to offering accessible and sustainable options.
Since 1 January 2017, TER Midi-Pyrénées and TER Languedoc-Roussillon have operated under the single banner TER Occitanie, managed by the regional authority. A similar strategy has been adopted by the SNCF Nouvelle-Aquitaine network, which offers services such as the Nouvelle-Aquitaine student TER subscription and refunds for TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine delays.
The TER Occitanie network today serves more than 281 stations, including:
In September 2018, as part of the implementation of the NOTRe law, the regional transport network was renamed liO. This change, similar to the initiatives around the TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine card, covers not only TER Occitanie but also CAR TER coaches, school transport and a regional carpooling service, strengthening intermodality and accessibility of transport in the region.
In 2021, TER Occitanie operates on an extensive network of 30 rail lines, covering nearly 2,636 km of track. Every day, more than 63,000 passengers use these trains, highlighting their essential role in regional mobility. Likewise, the TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine network offers options such as the monthly TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine pass and special discounts such as €1 tickets in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
To meet growing needs, several modernisation and line-reopening projects are underway in Occitanie. Among these initiatives is the reopening of the Nîmes - Pont-Saint-Esprit line. In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, similar projects, such as the development of the TER Bordeaux-La Rochelle lines and improvements to TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine schedules, demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sustainable mobility.
