Similarly, Intercités train delays do happen from time to time (and we're sorry about that). Here is all the information about Intercités train delays.
Several types of tickets are available for sale for an Intercités train.
First of all, as with TER and TGV trains, there are 1st and 2nd class tickets, which differ in comfort, onboard services and, above all, price. Discover all the Intercités ticket fares and prices.
Note: the TGV Intercités doesn't exist! Contrary to what one might think, Intercités trains are not TGVs, even though they offer fast and efficient journeys on many lines.
For example, for an Intercités journey between Paris and Orléans, the 1st class price will be higher than 2nd class. We also recommend checking whether your SNCF discount card is valid on Intercités lines so you can benefit from any advantages.
Discover the specific Intercités baggage and luggage policy.
Don't forget to label your luggage carefully so it isn't mistaken for a suspicious package. Also make sure it isn't too bulky so as not to inconvenience other passengers.
If your luggage exceeds standard dimensions, opt for SNCF's Bagage à Domicile (Luggage Home Delivery) service. This convenient service lets you have your suitcases delivered directly to your destination, so you can travel light and worry-free.
Just like on TGVs, Intercités & SNCF offer discount cards for everyone, based on how often you travel with the rail company.
More information on the various discount cards available is available here.
Please note: offers exclusively dedicated to Intercités trains, such as the forfait Court or the Optiforfait, are no longer available for purchase. These packages were designed for regular travellers wishing to use the Intercités network unlimited.
However, if you already hold an Optiforfait, rest assured it remains valid and usable until its expiry date.
On the other hand, there is currently no specific promo code for Intercités trains… but who knows, maybe one day? Fingers crossed!
For weekend adventurers, discover Intercités 100% éco!
SNCF and Intercités thought of you with the Intercités 100% éco offer, featuring budget-friendly journeys to popular destinations like Paris-Nantes or Paris-Strasbourg. Don't forget to check the running days for these trains before booking your ticket.
Are Intercités trains eco-friendly?
The answer is a resounding yes! Take, for example, a journey between Bordeaux and Toulouse (212 km as the crow flies). Here's a comparison of CO2 emissions per passenger by mode of transport:
TGV: 366.8 g CO2e per passenger.
Intercités: 1.1 kg CO2e per passenger.
Bus: 7.5 kg CO2e per passenger.
Electric car: 20.5 kg CO2e per passenger (carpooling with 2 people).
This comparison shows that travelling by Intercités train is one of the most environmentally friendly options, ideal for reducing your carbon footprint while discovering new destinations.

Yes, it is entirely possible to choose your seat on board Intercités trains, subject to availability.
Your seat is chosen when you book your ticket and depends on the class you select. Be sure to book early to maximise your chances of getting the seat you want.
To find out more about how to choose your specific seat on Intercités trains, here is the Intercités seating plan and all seat allocation conditions.
Just as with TER trains, boarding Intercités trains is simple and convenient. You just need a valid ticket, which must be validated at the station before boarding. For even more convenience, you can also opt for an Intercités e-ticket, available directly on your smartphone.
Intercités trains offer a range of services to make your journey pleasant and convenient.
On daytime Intercités trains, for example, you'll find spaces specially designed to carry bicycles, perfect for families or cycling enthusiasts. And that's not all — Intercités trains have plenty more in store to enhance your onboard experience.

We do, however, recommend checking whether these services are available on your route.

Another service available on daytime Intercités trains: onboard catering, thanks to the Intercités bar car!
Unlike TGVs, Intercités trains recommend ordering your meal in advance, ideally when you buy your ticket. You can place your order up to 20 hours before departure, and once on board, your meal will be delivered directly to your seat for maximum comfort.
On overnight Intercités trains, unique services are also available, including private spaces in 1st and 2nd class. To ensure an even safer experience, a women-only space is available at night.
What is an Intercités SNCF train?
Created in 2006 under the name Corail (a portmanteau combining "Confort" and "Rail"), the Intercités brand has, since 2012, brought together all of SNCF's "classic medium-distance trains".
Before 2012, SNCF's rail offer was split into three separate brands:
Intercités trains run on the French rail network at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and up to 200 km/h on certain strategic sections. They play a key role in regional development.
These trains are even nicknamed by the State "the territorial balance trains", as they have helped revitalise rail lines and boost certain regions. Their importance in connecting medium-sized towns to major cities is undeniable.
Today, the Intercités service is made up of two main offers: daytime Intercités and overnight Intercités.
With these two services, you can travel across France, day or night, and discover more than 200 must-see destinations. Intercités lines serve cities such as Strasbourg, Nantes, Lyon, Toulouse and Clermont-Ferrand, among others.
In recent years, Intercités has been modernising its fleet by introducing new trains and renovating older ones. These efforts aim to improve passenger comfort and the quality of onboard services.
🌱 As a bonus, Intercités trains emit 15 times less CO2 than a car or a bus, making them an ideal choice for travelling while respecting the environment. So why hesitate?
