🚞 How do you get to your ski resort?

    En savoir plus

We know it better than anyone, since we're all skiers ourselves at the Tictacteam: getting to ski resorts is COMPLICATED! Indeed, unless you drive there directly and pay the many tolls, fuel, etc., getting to the resorts is tricky since no train serves these villages at the foot of the slopes directly. You'll need to reach the town, and specifically the station closest to your ski resort, then take a shuttle or a taxi, which come with extra costs... all while loaded down with your suitcases and sometimes (for the best of us) with our ski gear. What a nightmare!

That's why our two founders, Hugo & Simon, when they launched Tictactrip with the goal of connecting France's remote areas, made it a priority to make access to ski resorts much simpler for everyone! This comes largely from their own experience and the many mishaps that can turn a day of ski travel into a real ordeal.

To get to your resort, you can book a train ticket, a bus journey, or even a carpooling trip! These are the main modes of transport for ski resorts. Otherwise, you can make your own way there. Other types of transport such as boat, plane, or other air travel aren't suited to this kind of trip.

At Tictactrip, we let you both compare your bus, train and carpooling tickets to reach the town closest to your resort of choice, and also combine these different modes of transport to offer you a journey from your home all the way to your resort, right at the foot of the slopes! How? On our site, you can search for your route, for example: Paris-Meribel. Four tabs will then appear, comparing bus, train and carpooling, plus a "combined" tab. This one also factors in our partner shuttle companies and finds you the cheapest journeys and/or the shortest journeys. Your tickets will therefore be intelligently combined so you don't wait around at the station. These combinations save you the time of figuring out on your own how to get from the town below the resort up to your resort! It's one of the ways to go skiing on a budget. Pretty handy service, don't you think?

🎿 What are the French people's favourite ski resorts?

    En savoir plus

According to a survey of Paris Match readers from January 2019, here is the list of the French people's favourite ski resorts, in order of preference:

    • Risoul, in the Hautes-Alpes, the ultimate symbol of a family-friendly, festive resort! There's nothing more to add except that you simply must discover it.
    • Megève, the authentic winter sports resort. It's also the very first ski resort ever founded in France.
    • Avoriaz, a resort located almost entirely within the Lingarets forest, which earns it the nickname "Belle de Bois" (Beauty of the Woods). It sits at an altitude of 1,800 metres and has the unique feature of being a car-free resort!
    • Saint-Lary, one of the best ski resorts in the Pyrenees, and indeed in all of France. More specifically, the Saint-Lary ski area is split into three resorts: Saint-Lary 1700 - Le Pla d'Adet, Saint-Lary 1900 - Espiaube, and finally Saint-Lary 2400 - Vallon du Portet.
    • Les Menuires, a Savoyard ski resort located in the Tarentaise valley. It's part of the world-famous 3 Vallées ski area and was inaugurated in 1965.
    • Val Thorens, a family-friendly ski resort that holds a record: it's the highest resort in Europe, at an altitude of 3,230 metres (although Zermatt in Switzerland reaches a maximum altitude of 3,880 metres). This resort is also part of the 3 Vallées ski area!
    • Val d'Isère is a Savoyard ski resort that's part of the Espace Killy ski area, now known as the Val d'Isère-Tignes ski area, which it shares with Tignes. It's a world-renowned resort, having hosted events at the 1992 Albertville Olympics, as well as the 2009 World Championships, for example!
    • Courchevel, the prestige resort! Indeed, few skiers are unfamiliar with this famous resort, home to the most luxurious brands found at ski resorts, whose skiers are often celebrities, even stars! You might just run into Leonardo Di Caprio, David Beckham, or even Christina Aguilera — who knows? You can always try to impress them on your skis.
    • La Plagne is made up of 7 different ski resorts, each offering a unique experience! La Plagne's ski area is all the more impressive since it's combined with Les Arcs to form the famous Paradiski, with its 420 km of slopes!
    • Le Grand-Tourmalet Pic du Midi is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees and ranks among the best in France! It offers skiers no less than 100 km of marked slopes for unrivalled skiing enjoyment!

So, where are you off to for your ski holiday?

    History of skiing

Skiing is mainly a winter sport, born, according to historical writings, 3000 years before Christ in the Nordic countries. This practice was originally used as a means of getting around. Then, with the growth of tourism, interest in skiing developed. It became a luxury pastime, then a fully-fledged sport, and finally the skiing we know today, meaning a practice that is increasingly widespread, popularised, and accessible.

Indeed, the prices for accessing ski resorts and for skiing itself have only been falling over the years.

And that's exactly what we contribute to at Tictactrip: giving you easier and easier access to your ski resorts thanks to our combined trips that take you straight to the foot of the slopes! What's more, the French ski pass is the cheapest in the world, who can beat that?

For example, we've added the Altibus and Alpybus shuttles, which take you straight to the high-altitude resorts. And that's great for saving money!

The creation of the first French ski resorts as we know them today came about in the 20th century. Before that, there were small villages that lived solely off their pastures and were completely isolated from the rest of the world. But one day, a family whose name you surely know, the Rothschilds, from the expression "I'm not made of money" (I'm not filthy rich), found their favourite spot in the village of Megève in the 1910s. That's when they set about building the infrastructure needed for skiing as a leisure activity, creating the first French ski resort! Many others followed, such as Courchevel or Alpe d'Huez. Other countries such as Switzerland, Austria and Canada also went on to open their own ski resorts.

Today France has no fewer than 350 ski resorts, spread across all of our mountain ranges, whether the Vosges, the Jura, the Alps, the Pyrenees, or the Massif Central! In other words, there's a huge variety of ski environments in France. The landscapes and resorts each have their own character, so it's hard to choose! Luckily, as we said above, skiing is becoming more and more accessible, and you can now pick your resort for next winter and discover a new one every year!
