The history of Le Grand Bornand

Le Grand-Bornand is a French commune located in Haute-Savoie, in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its postal code is 74450. Nestled at the foot of the Aravis mountain range, this authentic mountain resort has around 2,200 inhabitants, known as the Bornandins, spread over an area of 61.69 km².

Rich with a centuries-old history, Le Grand-Bornand has managed to preserve its identity while developing:

  • 1340: The parish of Le Grand-Bornand separates from that of Thônes.
  • 1860: Savoy, and thus Le Grand-Bornand, becomes part of France.
  • 1914: Opening of the Annecy – Le Grand-Bornand railway line, boosting exchanges.
  • 1955: Creation of the ski resort, marking the start of tourist growth.
  • 2000: Hosting of the first international biathlon competitions.
