The history of Valmorel

Located in the Savoie department, at the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the resort of Valmorel (postcode 73260) is an authentic mountain destination, nestled at the foot of the Lauzière massif. Covering an area of around 27.39 km², it is home to a permanent population of about 470 residents, which multiplies during the winter season thanks to the influx of holidaymakers who come to enjoy its ski area and alpine landscapes.

Designed to offer an alternative to large concrete resorts, Valmorel was born from the desire to create a modern resort while respecting Savoyard authenticity. Its history reflects an ambitious and innovative project:

  • 1976: the decision to build a new ski resort in Savoie is made, with the aim of preserving harmony with the surrounding landscape.
  • 1977: construction work begins, involving architects and local craftsmen to design a mountain village faithful to tradition.
  • December 1978: official opening of Valmorel to the public, which immediately charms visitors with its warm, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
  • 1984: installation of the very first detachable chairlift in France, confirming the resort's ambition to be a pioneer and innovator.
  • Over the decades, Valmorel has evolved: modernising its facilities, developing its ski area and diversifying its activities to appeal to both winter sports enthusiasts and summer holidaymakers.

What gives Valmorel its charm is its unique architecture: here, no large apartment blocks, but traditional wood and stone chalets, adorned with slate roofs. The hamlets are connected by pedestrian lanes lined with shops, creating a friendly atmosphere where you can stroll around with your skis on.

In winter, Valmorel offers a vast ski area linked to Doucy and Saint-François-Longchamp, offering more than 165 km of slopes suited to all levels. But the resort is not limited to the winter season: in summer, it becomes a true paradise for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, with its marked trails, spectacular panoramas and numerous family activities.

Today, Valmorel appeals through its perfect balance between modernity and tradition, and remains true to its philosophy: to offer visitors an authentic, friendly and environmentally respectful experience, in the heart of one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in France.
