The history of Flaine

Flaine is an iconic ski resort located in the heart of Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Nestled between 1,600 and 2,500 metres in altitude, it offers privileged access to the Grand Massif ski area, one of the largest in France, linked to Samoëns, Les Carroz, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval.

A rare feature in the Alps: Flaine has no permanent residents. Designed entirely for tourism, it welcomes thousands of skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts every winter, drawn by its modernist architecture and environmental commitment. The resort covers more than 16 km² and has the postcode 74300.

Its history is as remarkable as its design:

  • 1959: The couple Éric and Sylvie Boissonnas discover a former mountain pasture called Flénoz and decide to create an avant-garde resort there, combining art, urban planning and respect for nature.
  • 1963–1968: Construction of Flaine begins under the direction of architect Marcel Breuer, a leading figure of the Bauhaus movement. Its raw concrete style blends perfectly with the mountainous terrain.
  • 1968: Official opening of the resort, a pioneer in its innovations: a car-free resort, internal cable television, a modern cable car and the first snow cannons in France.
  • 1980: Flaine officially joins the Grand Massif area, offering more than 265 km of linked pistes.
  • Since 2000: The resort has multiplied its sustainable initiatives: optimised snow management, low-energy buildings, waste sorting and protection of alpine wildlife.
  • 2019: Its architecture and modernist heritage are listed on the 20th Century Heritage Inventory, cementing Flaine's status as a true open-air museum.

Visionary, artistic and respectful of its environment, Flaine is much more than a ski resort. It is a living work of art at the heart of the Alps, where culture, design and nature coexist harmoniously.
