The history of Abondance

Abondance, a typical village in Haute-Savoie located at the heart of the valley that bears its name, is a place steeped in history and tradition. Known for its medieval abbey and its famous Abondance PDO cheese, the town beautifully embodies the alliance between religious heritage, alpine craftsmanship and generous nature.

For curious travellers, the history of Abondance is a real journey through time:

  • 11th century: Founding of the Abondance priory by regular canons, which became an abbey in 1140. The monks structured the valley, created alpine pastures and developed the art of cheese-making.
  • 13th – 14th centuries: Golden age of the abbey. Abondance cheese gained regional and then international renown. In 1381, it was even served at the pope's table in Avignon.
  • 15th century: Gradual decline of the abbey, but the cheese-making economy continued to prosper in the valley.
  • 1761: Final closure of the abbey, which today remains a gem of Savoyard heritage.
  • 1996: Abondance cheese is awarded the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), a symbol of preserved and passed-down craftsmanship.

From its Gothic frescoes to its living agricultural traditions, Abondance carries on a unique heritage where monastic life, alpine culture and gastronomy blend harmoniously. Every stone, every pasture tells the story of a village deeply rooted in its terroir.
