👨‍✈️ Boarding

En savoir plus

Boarding Deutsche Bahn trains: What you need to know

To travel with Deutsche Bahn, you must have a valid ticket.

Do you need to validate your ticket?

Ticket validation depends on the type of train:

  • ICE, IC and EC trains: No validation needed. An electronic or printed ticket is enough.
  • Regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn): Some paper tickets bought at the station must be validated before boarding at a dedicated machine.

It's recommended to always check the instructions on your ticket to avoid a fine in the event of an inspection.

Is ID required?

If you're travelling with a named ticket, such as one purchased with a BahnCard discount, you may be asked for proof of identity during a ticket check.

When should you arrive at the station?

  • Long-distance trains (ICE, IC, EC): Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before to have time to find your platform and carriage.
  • Regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn): These trains often run with open access, but it's better to be on time so you don't miss it.

History of the Deutsche Bahn train company

If you've ever travelled in Germany, chances are you've taken a Deutsche Bahn train! Indeed, this company is not only the largest rail company in Germany, but also the second largest in Europe, just behind Russian Railways.

Deutsche Bahn was born in 1994 from the merger of Deutsche Bundesbahn (West Germany) and Deutsche Reichsbahn (East Germany), becoming Germany's unified national rail operator.

It offers train journeys across the whole country, but also beyond its borders. Since 2010, for example, Deutsche Bahn has allowed travel between Frankfurt and London, as well as between Frankfurt and Paris. A great opportunity to explore France and the United Kingdom with German trains! 🚆

As a major player in European rail transport, Deutsche Bahn carried no fewer than 4.4 billion passengers in 2016. An impressive figure that reflects its importance.

The German company's trains are easy to recognise: most feature a distinctive red colour. However, Deutsche Bahn has also introduced white trains: the ICE (Intercity-Express). These are the company's high-speed trains, comparable to our TGV inOui in France.

Thanks to the ICE, major German cities like Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne are connected at high speed, reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h! Impressive, isn't it? 🚄

If you'd like to book a ticket for an ICE train or any other journey with Deutsche Bahn, use our intermodal comparison tool to find the best deals and travel at the best price!
