How to choose your seat on my train?

choose your seat on a train

You are about to travel by train but would like to get a bit more information? You're in the right place!

Before booking your seat, it is important to know your travel conditions and therefore know if it is possible for you to choose your seat on board a train.

Unfortunately, this is not the case on all types of trains. We explain everything below, by company type.

SNCF train seat selection

Among SNCF train brands, it is possible with some to choose your seat on board. However, as you will have understood, this is not the case for all. Let's discover the conditions case by case.

Ouigo seating

On board the SNCF low-cost trains, OUIGO TGVs, you can enjoy a quiet seat OUIGO. Indeed, there are three distinct types of seats with OUIGO:

  1. Standard seats,

  2. seats with electrical outlet,

  3. and quiet seats.

Of course, you can choose your OUIGO seating, seats other than "standard" will be subject to a surcharge (although it is not very high).

Finally, it is not yet possible to choose your exact seat with OUIGO, but you are guaranteed to have a seat!

If you are traveling with friends or family and book all tickets at the same time, OUIGO will take this into account and try to book you a "block" or at least seats next to each other.

If, however, you are not seated next to each other due to separate reservations, we invite you to go to the OUIGO service on board. They will be happy to help you and sort out the situation.

Note, there is no OUIGO 1st class seat.

InOui seating

On board SNCF's TGV InOui trains, there are two types of class:

  • InOui 1st class with isolated single seats, seats for 2 or 4.

  • InOui 2nd class with side-by-side or block seating.

Of course, depending on the class chosen, the price of your ticket will vary. The seats on InOui TGVs can be easily reclined and contain a retractable tablet, fitted with electrical outlets in 1st class...

Also, there is an InOui Business First space, where you can work, conduct a meeting or rest in complete calm! This space is reserved for InOui First Class Premium travelers and for the following destinations:

  • Paris,

  • Lille Flandres,

  • Bordeaux,

  • Lyon,

  • Marseille,

  • Montpellier,

  • Nantes,

  • Rennes,

  • Strasbourg.

Also, you can choose your InOui seat from a large number of parameters, such as the direction of the train, rather aisle or window side... It's up to you to choose your InOui seating!

Intercités seating

For Intercités trains, the answer is harder to give. Indeed, some Intercités swear only by free seating on board, while others are only on reservation and offer the possibility to choose your seat in the direction of the train for example. This is the case for all Intercités journeys except for trips from Marseille to Nice as well as between Narbonne and Cerbère. Of course, the choice of seat is conditioned by the limit of available seats.

It therefore appears that it is quite possible for you to book your Intercités seat on most trains!

Moreover, the SNCF app allows you to quickly find out the remaining seats on board your Intercités train with optional reservation. You're going to love traveling by train!

Finally, in Intercités trains, there are first class seats, block seats, seats side by side... in short a great variety to meet all your needs!

TER seating

For your TER train journey, you unfortunately will not have the chance to choose your seat. Indeed, on board these trains, only one golden rule applies: first come, first served!

Yes, with TER, seating is free. So you won't be able to reserve your seat. But to have the chance to choose, all you have to do is arrive early at the station. No need to pay extra!

Lyria train seat selection

For your journeys on board Lyria trains, you can easily choose your seats. So, if you are traveling as a family for example, remember to reserve a block of 4 with Club 4 or Family Block seats.

Within TGV Lyria trains, there are three types of Lyria classes:

  • Standard class,

  • Standard 1st class,

  • Business 1st class.

Each of these classes has different advantages and fares.

Finally, if you choose to book a Lyria Overbooking ticket, you are not guaranteed to have a seat. This will depend on availability.

Eurostar train seat selection (formerly Thalys)

Since the merger of Thalys with Eurostar, the choice of seat depends on your class:

  • In Eurostar Standard, the seat is assigned automatically: you cannot choose it.

  • In Eurostar Plus and Eurostar Premier (1st class), you can view the car plan and choose or modify your seat for free from "Manage my reservation", on the website or app.

The Premier class offers you more spacious space, ideal for traveling peacefully, especially with children!

Eurostar train seat selection

During your Eurostar journeys, you will unfortunately not have a choice of your seat on board the train.

Indeed, the company chose to assign seat placement automatically to ensure fair distribution across all its trains.

However, you will have a choice regarding your type of Eurostar ticket. There is:

  • Eurostar Standard class with 2 suitcases and 1 carry-on bag.

  • Eurostar Standard Premier class with these same luggage conditions, as well as spacious seats and a light meal served to you on board.

  • Business Premier class with these same services as well as refundable tickets, a starred chef meal from Raymond Blanc accompanied by champagne as well as a taxi reservation service and private lounges in London and Paris. Now that's the class.

Is it possible to reserve your seat when booking on Tictactrip?

Unfortunately, we do not yet offer this type of service when making reservations on the Tictactrip website.

As you have seen, depending on the transport companies, the reservation and seat selection conditions differ, which makes the task difficult.

But don't worry! It's in our future plans.
