FAQ for the Trainline company

🚌 Types of transport compared

En savoir plus
Quite logically, and as its name suggests, Trainline first and foremost offers train tickets. But for some time now, the site hasn't stopped at rail journeys. Indeed, it's now also possible to book bus travel from the Trainline app or website. So to be completely clear, Trainline compares two types of transport: buses and trains. But the platform only compares simple journeys. It doesn't offer combined journeys like Tictactrip does, for instance. The same goes if you want the option of carpooling, for example - that won't be possible on the Trainline site, unfortunately.

🇫🇷 Destinations in France

En savoir plus
With more than 207 partner companies across Europe, Trainline offers journeys across the entire old continent. And quite logically, the company therefore also offers a whole host of journeys within France. But, since Trainline does not offer intermodality, the results on their site are numerous but not necessarily all relevant. Indeed, not all cities are necessarily served by train or bus. And thanks to intermodality, Tictactrip gives access to smaller cities and offers more complete coverage of the metropolitan area.

🛸 Intermodality & combinations

En savoir plus

Intermodality, what is it? Behind this word that can seem intimidating lies a concept that's not actually that complicated.

According to Wikipedia, it's "the use of several modes of transport during the same trip." Simple, right?

In fact, we talk about intermodality or combinations when you take a bus then a train (for example) to reach your destination. You then combine one mode of transport (train or bus) with another in order to save time and/or money.

Trainline does not offer combinations on its site, you can simply compare your bus and train journeys.

Tictactrip also lets you compare, but adds its combination system on top. This gives access to a greater number of destinations in France and Europe. And of course, it offers more attractive fares on these trips.

📲 In-app purchases

En savoir plus
In-app purchases are, put simply, the ability on a site to pay for and receive a product (or a service) in return. On the Trainline site and apps, purchases are integrated and you can book and pay for your train and bus tickets directly. On Tictactrip, this feature isn't available yet. But a little patience - the addition of in-app purchases is planned for 2019! In the meantime, you can still compare and choose your route. You'll simply be redirected to the partner companies' pages.

🏷 Prices adjusted in real time

En savoir plus
Comparing and offering journeys across France and Europe is the bread and butter for online comparison sites. But what's also particularly important is providing users with tickets at prices adjusted in real time. And indeed, that way there are no bad surprises between the moment you select your journey and the moment you pay for it (no price increase or other surprises). Fortunately, most comparison sites work with a real-time price adjustment system. That's the case for both Trainline and Tictactrip!

🤔 What is Trainline?

En savoir plus

Simply put, Trainline is a travel agency that compares train and bus tickets in Europe, just like Tictactrip! As such, you can find the train and/or bus offer that suits you on the Trainline platform. This platform is also accessible on computer as well as via a mobile app.

🌍 Destinations served in Europe

En savoir plus
Trainline is one of the leading online travel comparison sites, and it's not just interested in journeys within France. Indeed, it offers bus and train journeys across a large part of Europe. The site claims it can take you to 44 countries across the continent. To do this, Trainline partners with 207 rail and bus companies. That's a lot! It's more than Tictactrip, for example, which offers trips to 31 countries in Europe (for now) and has more than a hundred partner companies.

History of the Trainline comparison site

Trainline is a journey comparison site that lets you book bus and train tickets across Europe. The Trainline site was first called Capitaine Train, then Captain Train. Capitaine Train was created in May 2009 following the opening of train ticket sales by SNCF to other online retailers besides Voyages-sncf.com.

The service became available to the general public in 2012. First as a web app, before launching as an iOS and Android app in 2014. In 2016, the French company Capitaine Train was eventually bought by the British company Trainline. It took the name Trainline that same year. Today, the Trainline app is a major player in train and bus ticket sales in Europe! It offers tickets for sale from rail and bus companies from 45 countries across Europe! The site claims more than 80 million visits per month.

So to sum up, Trainline was originally designed to offer an alternative to Voyages-sncf.com's services. So it was originally a comparison site specializing in train tickets. And more recently, bus journeys have also become available on the Trainline site.

So, faced with the many travel comparison sites springing up online, Trainline also has a few limitations. It pays the price, for example, of being "just a simple online comparison site". Indeed, because platforms like Tictactrip now offer precise comparisons of journeys based on duration and price, but also offer combined journeys between bus, train and carpooling. This has the advantage of offering more options and often cheaper trips. It's up to you to compare!
