The history of Clermont-Ferrand
Clermont-Ferrand is a fascinating city, both historic and forward-looking. Located in the heart of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, it has around 141,000 inhabitants across nearly 43 km². Its skyline stands out at the foot of the Auvergne volcanoes, including the Puy de Dôme, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Its history is marked by the union of two former rivals, Clermont and Montferrand, and by an urban continuity spanning antiquity, the Middle Ages and the industrial boom of the 20th century.
From ancient origins to the medieval city
As early as the 1st century, the town appears under the name Nemossos, "metropolis of the Arverni". In Gallo-Roman times, it becomes Augustonemetum, thriving around the hill of what is now the cathedral. After the invasions, the city retreats and fortifies itself, a prelude to its medieval flourishing.
In the Middle Ages, Clermont establishes itself as an episcopal city surrounded by ramparts, while Montferrand, founded at the end of the 12th century, develops its own urban organisation. The rivalry between the two towns would last for centuries.
The union of Clermont and Montferrand
In 1630, the Edict of Troyes issued by Louis XIII administratively unites the two cities, a union confirmed in 1731 under Louis XV. The true urban merger is completed at the start of the 20th century, though distinct neighbourhood identities remain.
