So, all set to travel by train?! What's that, you don't know what baggage to bring on your trip and board your train?
Don't worry, we've created a summary of the baggage policies of train companies for you. The answers to your questions are on this page, for sure!
It is true that it is important to ask yourself the question about SNCF baggage accepted for your trip. It would indeed be annoying to take three suitcases of clothes before realizing that only one is accepted...
This is why we chose to summarize all SNCF conditions for you concerning baggage, by train company.
With Ouigo, the baggage policy is simple. Each passenger can travel with either: two hand baggage items or one hand baggage and one cabin baggage. This also applies to children and babies.
Hand baggage must not exceed the following measurements 36 x 27 x 15 cm (height x width x depth). As for cabin baggage, it must comply with 55 x 35 x 25 cm (height x width x depth).
If you don't have enough of these two baggage items, you can add an extra one for just €5. Each passenger can add up to two additional Ouigo baggage items to their trip. To add extra baggage before your trip, go to the "My Reservations" tab on the Ouigo site directly.
Otherwise, with Ouigo, you have the possibility to bring your stroller, limited to 2 strollers per reservation and per route.
But what about special Ouigo baggage?
By this we mean scooters, skis, surfboards, musical instruments and much more. Well, Ouigo is very concise. Scooters, skis/surf with cover and for a size less than 2 meters, violins, guitars, skateboards and bicycles under cover (max 120X90cm) are allowed to travel with you.
Finally, as you might expect, certain objects and baggage are prohibited on Ouigo trains. This includes notably:
household appliances, televisions and other very bulky objects, cardboard boxes, shopping bags, weapons, explosives and dangerous products as well as illegal products.
With these different SNCF train brands, baggage policies are considerably less restrictive. Indeed, the rule is: travel only with baggage that you can carry yourself. Your baggage is your responsibility and must be labeled for travel.
At InOui, the premium train brand, there is a My Baggage SNCF service. This is a transport service for your bulky baggage such as a bike, a wheelchair or simply your suitcases. You will even have the choice to collect your baggage at a relay point, at home or at work the next day! To find out more, go HERE.
Also, please note that skis and water sports boards are also allowed on TGV INOUI, TER and Intercités trains. The same applies to bikes. All are accepted provided they are stored in a cover. The maximum size accepted for bikes is 120x90cm. Of course, remember to place this bulky baggage in the dedicated spaces on board the trains.
Finally, illicit and potentially dangerous items are prohibited on trains, that goes without saying. It's a matter of common sense and civility.
Since the merger of Thalys with Eurostar, traveling with a full load is still quite possible! Depending on your class, you are entitled to:
in Eurostar Standard and Eurostar Plus: 2 large suitcases + 1 hand baggage,
in Eurostar Premier: 3 large suitcases + 1 hand baggage.
On these continental routes, large suitcases can measure up to 75 x 53 x 30 cm. There is no strict weight limit, but the rule remains the same: only bring what you can carry and store yourself, in the baggage spaces at each end of the cars. Your hand baggage will be placed under your seat or above, in the dedicated luggage racks.
Strollers are allowed on board, folded and stored in the spaces provided for bulky baggage. Finally, for bicycles and ski equipment, conditions are particular: check directly with Eurostar before your departure.
With Eurostar, with the Standard ticket you have purchased, you will be able to travel with:
1 standard-sized hand baggage,
2 suitcases or bulkier baggage, not exceeding 85 cm for the longest side.
However, if you have opted for an Eurostar Premier ticket, you will be entitled to bring with you not 2 but 3 suitcases or bags. Of course, this is possible at no additional cost, it's included in your ticket!
Let us now move on to bulky baggage and special baggage. By this, we mean all strollers, prams, musical instruments and bicycles. Eurostar has chosen to allow all of this baggage for your trips, only if they respect the measurement condition described previously: not exceeding 85 cm for the longest side. Also, these items must be stored under cover.
Finally, know that if your baggage does not comply with this rule, you will need to indicate it when registering your baggage at the time of your Eurostar ticket reservation. Of course, this Eurostar service will not be without additional charges.
Indeed, here are the prices if you decided to add extra baggage:
€34 for each baggage for sporting equipment such as golf clubs and collectible weapons such as a rifle, a knife...
€34 to €46 for bicycles in their cover.
€40 to €64 for unassembled bicycles.
€46 for bulky baggage such as large musical instruments...
With Regio Jet, you can travel with all the baggage you wish to take with you, provided that you can handle it properly. Of course, your baggage must not harm others or the train journey. Common sense is therefore the simple rule of Regiojet!
Dangerous, illegal and illicit baggage cannot be taken on board Regiojet trains.
Strollers are allowed free of charge on RegioJet trains and must travel at the ends of the trains, in the dedicated spaces. The company invites you to book a seat close to these spaces.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to travel with a bike or scooter on board trains of this company.
