The history of Grenoble

Grenoble has a fascinating history spanning more than two millennia. Long before becoming the alpine metropolis we know today, it was just a small Gallo-Roman town called Cularo, set on the banks of the Isère. Surrounded by mountains and positioned at a strategic crossroads, the city played an important role in the region from an early stage.

At the end of Antiquity, Cularo became Gratianopolis in honour of Emperor Gratian, before the name gradually evolved into "Grenoble". During the Middle Ages, the city took on a new dimension: it became the capital of Dauphiné and built successive ramparts to protect a growing population. This period marked the rise of institutions, the first suburbs and its administrative role.

The 16th and 17th centuries deeply transformed Grenoble. The Wars of Religion, the action of the Duke of Lesdiguières and major urban planning campaigns gave rise to a more structured, more open city with a modernised city wall. The city confirmed its status as a provincial capital thanks to its Parliament and public institutions.

With the French Revolution, Grenoble entered a new era. The Day of the Tiles in 1788 heralded the upheavals to come. In the 19th century, industrialisation strongly boosted the city: glove-making, cement works and the development of "white coal" (hydroelectric power) propelled Grenoble to the rank of major industrial city. It was also a period of cultural and scientific creation, with museums, libraries and institutions opening that paved the way for the emergence of a university city.

In the 20th century, Grenoble established itself as a scientific and innovative city. Major laboratories, the growth of the university and hosting the 1968 Winter Olympics transformed its image and accelerated urban projects. Modern districts, infrastructure and technology hubs still shape Grenoble's landscape today.

From its Gallo-Roman past to its current status as an alpine metropolis geared towards research and technology, Grenoble has managed to reinvent itself while preserving its identity. Between heritage, mountains and innovation, it is a city where history and modernity coexist at the foot of the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne mountain ranges.
