Accessibility

Carpooling is a collaborative form of transport where several people share a vehicle for a common journey, usually planned in advance.

This practice not only helps cut travel costs and CO2 emissions, but also encourages social interaction between passengers.

Carpooling is often used for long-distance journeys, but it can also be used for everyday trips, such as commuting to and from work.

The Benefits of Carpooling

  • Financial savings: sharing fuel and toll costs between passengers reduces travel costs for everyone.
  • Environmental impact: by reducing the number of vehicles on the road, carpooling helps cut greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Less traffic: fewer cars on the road means less congestion and noise pollution.
  • Social aspects: carpooling offers a chance to meet new people and share experiences.

FAQ for the Carpooling company

🚗 Where to travel by carpool?

En savoir plus

Whether it's a Paris Marseille carpool with BlaBlaCar, a Paris Lyon carpool with Idvroom or your next carpool in France, Tictactrip lists the best carpooling trips for you.

It also depends on carpool Paris / carpool Marseille / carpool Rouen listings or carpool Lyon or in your region!

The offers available on BlaBlaCar and IDVROOM vary every day depending on the drivers who are travelling.

But on our website, you'll find great prices for carpooling trips across Europe!

With our carpool comparison tool, we offer you thousands of deals to travel across Europe in particular!

🧐 What does carpooling mean?

En savoir plus

Carpooling (in French "covoiturage") is a simple word: the prefix "co", also found in "collective" or "colleague", indicates having a social relationship with other people who are travelling.

The term "voiturage" symbolises the act of travelling by car.

Combined, the two give the term "covoiturage", which could be interpreted as travelling by car with other people.

And that's exactly the concept of carpooling!

Carpooling is therefore a collaborative form of transport in which a driver shares their journey with one or more passengers in exchange for sharing the costs (fuel, tolls, wear and tear, insurance, etc.). It is not a professional transport service (taxi/private hire): the driver cannot make a profit, or risk reclassification.

💵 Travel costs

En savoir plus

Carpooling travel costs are of course included in the price shown on Tictactrip, that's the very principle of carpooling.

The price only covers the driver's share of the actual costs (fuel, tolls, maintenance, insurance). Many platforms set price ranges to stay within cost-sharing rules. Official list of eligible expenses.

And if your driver asks you for something once you reach the toll booth, it's quite possibly just a little joke from your travel companion!

That's why the carpooling offers you'll find on your favourite carpool comparison platforms are, for the most part, very affordable.

🧳 Carpooling: luggage and suitcases

En savoir plus

Sure enough, we don't all travel the same way.

With carpooling, it's on a case-by-case basis: check the available space (cabin/standard suitcase, bulky items) in the listing and ask the driver. For BlaBlaCar Bus, the policy is standardised (2 hand luggage items + 1 in the hold up to 23 kg; extra options available).

Some people prefer to travel light, like adventurers, while others bring their entire wardrobe!

And if you're a cyclist wanting to travel by carpool, here's how to bring a bike on a carpool.

Carpooling Platforms

Several platforms make organising carpooling easier, such as:

BlaBlaCar: the reference for long-distance travel in Europe; also offers BlaBlaCar Bus and, in France, train comparison. BlaBlaCar Daily (formerly BlaBlaLines): daily commuting carpool; the ecosystem has absorbed Klaxit. Karos: a daily-commute specialist, deployed with many local authorities and employers. Mobicoop: a cooperative born from covoiturage-libre.fr, with no mandatory commission. Note: iDVROOM has ceased operations and was absorbed by Klaxit.

These platforms allow drivers to offer trips and passengers to find available seats.

    Types of Carpooling

Long-distance carpooling: Mainly used for intercity travel, this type of carpooling is often planned in advance via online platforms.

Daily carpooling: Used for regular trips, such as commuting to work, this type of carpooling is often organised between neighbours or colleagues.

🌳 Carpooling and the environment

En savoir plus

Carpooling is worth considering for everyday leisure trips, your next holidays, or simply to visit family!

Why?

Because it's an economical and eco-friendly reflex that helps reduce your carbon footprint.

The vehicle occupancy rate in this case ranges between 1.4 and 1.7.

Carpooling is therefore an effective way to reduce your CO2 emissions without investing in new equipment.

For example, a Lille - Caen trip is very long and not very pleasant by train, whereas it's convenient and cheap by carpool.

Increasing occupancy divides emissions per passenger. Over long distances, higher occupancy further improves emissions per passenger-km. See data from the Carpooling Observatory.

Carpooling now allows for a huge variety of destinations, as it lets you go directly from point A to point B without a "stopover" halfway around the world, while also making it possible to stop along the way on a longer journey.

The more you carpool, the more you reduce your CO2 emissions, and the higher your CO2 bonus will be.

Carpooling means a more eco-friendly journey, but it's also a way to discover and build social connections with people during a trip.

En savoir plus

Don't worry, at Tictactrip we truly take care of everything.

How to book with Tictactrip?

💡 Calculate the price of a carpool trip

En savoir plus

The principle of carpooling is cost-sharing between the driver and passengers.

It is therefore forbidden for the driver to make a profit. The price estimate must therefore be fair.

That's why platforms such as FlixCar, BlaBlaCar or Klaxit impose a certain price on their drivers when they offer a trip.

And why calculate it yourself when you have the eco-responsible booking platform that calculates the price of your trip specially for you? ;)

Base it on the actual costs of the trip; platforms often offer indicative ranges to stay within the cost-sharing framework, in reference to the official mileage scale.

♿️ Access for people with reduced mobility

En savoir plus

Accessibility mainly depends on the vehicle and the driver. Some platforms let you indicate accessibility needs and loading assistance. Always discuss your specific needs in advance. See also the accessibility scheme and the reduced-mobility form.

🆒 Carpooling: safety and comfort

En savoir plus

When travelling by carpool, here's our advice:

First, find out about:

Before departure: check the profile and reviews, confirm luggage and meeting point, allow some extra time. On board: seatbelt fastened, luggage in the boot, regular breaks for long trips. Children: conditions vary by platform (often no unaccompanied minors). Pets: at the driver's discretion for carpooling; on buses, only assistance dogs are allowed. On the insurance side, civil liability insurance covers passengers.

Otherwise, when you are a passenger:

  • Put your luggage in the boot
  • Fasten your seatbelt
  • If your driver wants to concentrate on the road, avoid being too noisy (but you can still chat.)

If you are the driver:

  • Make sure your vehicle's registration document is up to date
  • Check your tyre pressure, oil, water, headlights, brakes and windscreen wipers before you leave
  • Don't drive if you're tired
  • Take a break every two hours
  • 💵 How to find a cheap carpool?

    En savoir plus

The advantage of carpooling over train and plane is that carpooling lets you travel at rock-bottom prices, almost unbeatable in some cases!

Be flexible on time/day, book early, look at alternative meeting points (carpool areas) and compare with bus/train: depending on the schedule, one may be more worthwhile. In many areas, local subsidies support daily carpooling. Watch out for service fees.

So it's possible to find a cheap carpool to reach your favourite cities with Tictactrip!

Finally, be sure to also check the carpool refund policy and carpool cancellation policy.

    💸 Carpooling cancellation and refund

    En savoir plus

You can of course cancel your carpool whenever you want, unforeseen events happen to everyone and carpooling sites are understanding about this.

You will still need to notify the driver as soon as possible when you wish to cancel your booking, so they can adjust and potentially find a new passenger!

Conditions vary by platform. Generally: cancellation by the driver = full refund; cancellation by the passenger = variable refund depending on the timeframe, with service fees often non-refundable. See BlaBlaCar's cancellation policy.

For more information about refund terms, we recommend going directly to the pages dedicated to this topic on the BlaBlaCar and Klaxit websites.

    🗺 Carpooling areas in France

    En savoir plus

Do you like planning your carpool trips? No worries, that's understandable!

To help you better plan your trip, locate official car parks and meeting points via the national database and information published by local authorities.

To access it, we invite you to click here to discover this handy map!

Why this effort to list carpool areas?

Drivers like to know where they can take breaks, especially in regions with very few stops.

But it's not only for drivers, it's also for passengers of course!

Passengers can now book more easily to or from these carpool areas. It's more convenient for them too!

    History of carpooling

The concept of carpooling was born from a simple observation: the more passengers there are, the cheaper the trip.

By choosing carpooling, you share the costs of a car journey while optimising how full your vehicle is. Hitchhiking could be seen as the ancestor of carpooling.

Most carpooling comparison sites also compare bus, train and/or plane tickets. But their service still gathers all carpooling offers together to make your life easier.

Today, the BlaBlaCar platform, the industry leader, counts more than 100 million "carpoolers" across 22 countries — pretty impressive, isn't it?

Finally, it is even possible to combine your journey with carpooling and a bus and/or a train! For even more savings and ever shorter journeys!

Carpooling regulations are governed by the ministry in charge of transport. Find all the useful information you need to know, from insurance to pricing, on the website of the Ministry for Ecological Transition.
